What makes a great president? What is the yardstick for the measurement for greatness?

Steps

1. Answer the following questions:
   • Has the president set precedents that have been followed by his/her successors?
   • Does the president actually help his/her country?
2. For example, Washington established the two-term tradition.
   • Has the president set up lasting institutions that have survived the test of time? For example, the Cleveland Administration set up the Interstate Commerce Commission.
   • Has the president's political appointees been retained by future administrations?
3. For example, Obama has retained Bush's Secretary of Defense.
   • Has the president's policies been continued by future administrations?
4. For example, Johnson continued Kennedy's fight for civil rights.
   • Has the president's policies made an impact on world history?
5. For example, Franklin Roosevelt established America as leader of the free world and worked hard to re-establish a world organization dedicated to the pursuit of world peace and non-aggression.
   • How well did the president manage a crisis?
6. The Soviet Union made an attempt to impose a unilateral peace settlement on the Middle East, when Nixon called up our reserves, put our nuclear forces on alert, and sent the Sixth Fleet into the Mediterranean Sea. Consequently, the Soviet Union backed down from this overwhelming show of force.
   • What leadership qualities did the president have?
7. Reagan ended the Cold War, something that seven past presidents from Truman to Carter were unable to do. He made us feel proud to be Americans again and made us feel good about ourselves.

8. Monroe's Richard Rush negotiated the Bagot-Rush Treaty with Great Britain as acting secretary of state, while retaining his job as attorney general.

Knowing someone's political party is a good start to understanding their political beliefs. Republicans and Democrats tend to have similar beliefs as people in their own party, but not all the time. While reading this article, keep in mind that being a Republican or Democrat doesn't have to mean the person agrees with all of their party's policies.

1. Ask. There's nothing wrong with asking someone what their political affiliation is. If you weren't already, try bringing up a conversation about politics. Then try asking something like "hey I was just wondering, are you a Republican or Democrat?" Make sure that you be respectful of their answer, even if it isn't the one you wanted to hear.
2. Talk about the president. If you don't want to directly ask, one of the easiest ways to guess which party a person is in is to find out what they think of the current president. Most people, especially the ones who don't follow politics as much, will show a lot of respect for the president if they are in the same party. People also are very quick to point out the flaws of a president if they are in the other party. Keep in mind that this and all the other following steps are not nearly as accurate as just asking.
3. Observe the person's other views. Republicans tend to be economically and socially conservative, while Democrats tend to be liberal. Again keep in mind these are only generalizations.
